Update: October 14, 2019
Candidates for Miss America 2020 will wear evening gowns in their opening introductions, in what MAO describes as an "elegant recognition of the Miss America tradition."
State titleholders and leaders were informed of the change in a confidential memo this weekend, obtained by Pageant Planet (see photos above). Candidates will not be scored in their evening gowns, but judges will be instructed to include their observations of stage presence and communication skills in the composite scoring after preliminaries and final ballot. Many titleholders have begun designing evening gowns for this year's competition.
The "Phases of Competition and Scoring" states that finalists will wear "attire candidate feels represents her brand as she makes her final pitch for the job of Miss America 2020." Finalists will be allowed to change into whatever attire they would want to be crowned in if selected Miss America 2020.
According to the breakdown released in an official memo to the state Executive Directors, this year's scoring breakdown is as follows:
Preliminary Scoring
Personal Interview with Preliminary Judges - 20%
Preliminary Onstage Interview - 15%
Preliminary Talent - 50%
Social Impact Pitch - 15 %
Final Night Scoring
Composite Score - 20%
Final Onstage Interview - 25%
Final Talent - 30%
Social Impact Pitch - 20%
The Miss America Organization did not immediately return request for comment.
Many fans have expressed anger and disappointment over this decision, citing the organization's seeming desire to move away from pageantry and what its fanbase wants.

The Miss America 2020 competition will be the 93rd edition, where Miss America 2019 Nia Franklin will crown her successor. At this event, a new representative will be crowned to champion her platform and the Children's Miracle Network as Miss America 2020. The competition will be aired on NBC, its former home of two decades, with a two-hour telecast. The competition is scheduled to be telecast on December 19, 2019 from Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.
On Wednesday, June 5, 2019, Miss America Organization Chairwoman Gretchen Carlson announced her resignation from the position. Carlson will be replaced by Shantel Krebs, the former South Dakota secretary of state.
"When I was asked to take this volunteer position over a year ago, I dedicated myself to helping the organization build on its history while working to secure its future, and am extremely proud of the work we have collectively done," Carlson said. "With a promising network partnership, the time is ideal to give new leadership the opportunity to move forward with what has been accomplished. Miss America will always be a part of who I am and I will enthusiastically watch as the organization continues to grow and succeed."
