Donna Axum competed at the Miss Arkansas 1963 pageant where she won the crown, walked away with the title of Miss Arkansas 1963 and received the opportunity to advance to the Miss America 1964 pageant. Axum went on to win the preliminary swimsuit competition and the Miss America 1964 title.

After her time as Miss America, she became a university instructor, author, television executive producer, TV hostess, professional speaker and civic leader throughout her career. Axum was first married to Michael Alan Buckley and had one child, Lisa. She was divorced and remarried Gus Franklin Mutscher, from whom she divorced in 1972. She remarried J. Bryan Whitworth in 1984.

Donna Axum passed away on November 4, 2018 at 76 years old.
