Picking the best song to dance to is never easy, because there is just so many to choose from! But I've come up with a list of songs that have been huge hits this past year and now in 2014. Lyrical is one of the most beautiful talents to watch. With the combination of raw emotion, the perfect song, and looking the part, you could win your next talent with a lyrical dance. But where do you even start on picking the perfect song? Well I have here in no particular order, here is the top 10 songs of 2013-2014 for lyrical dancers.
Miss Ohio's lyrical dance
1) Say Something- A Great Big World featuring Christina Aguilera
This song has such powerful music and lyrics, it's hard not to get emotional with it. Because the song is so emotional, this could connect you to your audience and most importantly your judges, even more.
2) Stay- Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko
This popular mash up has been a favorite of many, and I was lucky enough to see an outstanding lyrical performance to this song at the 2013 Miss West Virginia pageant. The dancer poured her heart into her talent, and with each lyric, she drew the judges in. There wasn't a dry eye in the house after her performance.
3) To Make You Feel My Love- Glee
Although Glee isn't the original creator of this song, the cover that Lea Michelle sang on the show in tribute to her late love, Cory Monteith, tugged the hearts of many. Dancing to a song that is a cover can be in your favor because the song would be unique and fresh. No one else would have something like it and sometimes you may like the cover better than the original.
4) Wrecking Ball- Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus may twerk like a maniac, and leave her tongue out of her mouth a little too much, but she still is human and has just the same emotions as we all do. This song not only is powerful and very emotional, but it also tells a story. She tells the roller coaster ride of the relationship, and it pulls you in. Using this song can help you use the story, power, and emotion, to draw the judges in and hear your story more clearly.
5) See You Again- Carrie Underwood
For those of you who favor country music, this song is wonderful for lyrical. This song too tells a story, and if your platform or just something in your life relates to it, it would be a great way to show tribute to it through this song. It's not only emotional, but positively emotional.
6) All Of Me- John Legend
This song is such a sweet, beautiful song that just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Legend makes you feel like every girl should feel; loved. This song is focused to show how when in a relationship you must be open with someone and free, and with a lyrical dance you can express that beautifully. With fluid motions and warm emotion, this song could melt the heart of even the toughest judges.
7) Let It Go- Idina Menzel
From the hit movie Frozen, this song gives anyone the want to sing at the top of their lungs. It is powerful, loving, uplifting, and all around wonderful. Using this as a more positive lyrical dance to show that you are a strong, independent woman can let the judges see how perfect you are for the title.
8) Maddness- Muse
I love how different this song is. It's rhythm is so unique and the way you can turn this into the perfect lyrical dance takes true skill. This song could be perfect to show some tumbling in the routine too, and crazy flexibility. Take this song and make it your own, to show your "maddness" for the crown.
9) Demons- Imagine Dragons
We all have "things". They get to us, they hold us back, and they put us in a dark place. This song shows how you don't have to hide from your demons, but fight them. This lyrical routine can show strength, beauty, and the way to love yourself even when you may have thought you never could. The way you play this story on the stage can make or break your way to steal talent in a clean sweep.
10) Human- Christina Perri
This is a song perfect for showing who you are; you are only human. The story behind this song is so touching, because it tells how we all really feel. We can do everything we can, go to every extent, but we are only human and sometimes your best is all you can do. With this song emotion is key, and showing it with the most passion will help you tell your story. It wasn't until just the other day that I also heard this next song, and fell in love with it. After listening I realized I had to add it to my list, but I couldn't change any of the other songs either! So as an added bonus here is one more song to fall in love with like I did, when looking for a song for your lyrical routine.
(Bonus) Invisible-Hunter Hayes
This song is very uplifting. Hayes wrote this song about his life growing up, and this is one of those longs that just tug at your heart. It makes you realize that you're not alone and you aren't the only one who feels the way you do. If you're looking for a song that maybe connects with a bullying platform, or just a song to help show how strong you are, and can be, this song is the one for you. Lyrical routines most of the time are routines that tell a story. That's why many times above I stated how it "tells a story". What you must always remember is to tell the story in your own way. Make the story your own and show it with passion and raw emotion to give the judges that little tug on their heart that they need.
Her tip is: "Take the title seriously, but don't take yourself seriously!"Learn More
