The color of your lipstick is one of the most important details when it comes to evening gown. Your dress could be a slam dunk, but the wrong makeup could cause the look to fall flat.

Lipstick is one of the hardest aspects of pageant makeup. There are literally thousands of shades, which can make finding the right one a headache. Pair this with having to coordinate said shade to the rest of your look and the task can appear daunting. (Read: How To Keep Lipstick From Wearing Off During Your Pageant)

Luckily, there are some easy ways to help narrow down your hunt for the perfect shade. One starts by looking at the color of your evening gown. Your overall look at this part of the competition will make for a hefty part of your score. A perfect gown with perfect makeup will help you bring home the crown!

How to Match Your Lip Color With Your Evening Gown

Silver/white gowns One of the most popular colors gracing the stage, a white or silver gown looks amazing with a fierce red lip. Since these gowns are more about structure, fit and sparkle, the pop of color is perfect. For example, Miss Grand Colombia 2017 Francy Castano Suarez chose this deep shade of red to complete her look on the 2017 Miss Grand International stage. The red brings a pop of color to the look that draws the eye to her face. (Read: 7 Steps to Applying Red Lipstick)

A nude lip can work as well! This is a great option if you have lots of intricate beading on your gown, particularly near the face. While bright red works in this scenario, it can be a very bold look that may not suit every contestant. Miss Colombia 2017 Laura González sizzled on stage in this silver gown. The detailed beading combined with pin straight hair (another bold style choice) would have been too much when paired with a red lip. The nude hue is classy but still highlights González's gorgeous smile. (Read: How to Master the Straight Hair Look for Pageant Evening Gown)

Black gowns This is another trend that is on the rise. Black gowns are huge and for good reason. The trend is chic, classic and looks good on everyone. (Read: How to Style Makeup With a Black Evening Gown) A red lip is the way to go with this color. Black evokes a very demure, classy look on stage. A red lip is mature enough to match this while a brighter pink lip would be a bit too youthful for older contestants. Miss Grand Macau 2017 Kayii Lei nailed this look at Miss Grand International 2017. Her bright red lip paired with her gorgeous smile is the perfect accessory for this dramatic black gown. Blue gowns A classic pageant color. Like lipstick, there is a shade of blue for everyone. With a blue gown, it is important to keep in mind the exact shade of blue. For example, Miss World England 2017 Stephanie Hill paired this frosty blue gown with a princess pink lipstick. A bright red would have looked clownish paired with a blue this pale while a nude may wash you out, especially on paler skin tones. The pink looks royal and was perfect for the Miss World stage.

The shade also works for a royal blue gown. Miss Earth Venezuela 2017 Ninoska Vasquez rocked a similar shade during the long gown competition at Miss Earth 2017. This shade is a bit darker than Hill's, which is perfect for the dark blue. (Read: How to Choose the Right Blue Evening Gown)

Green gowns This one is very straightforward. A green gown should be paired with a nude lipstick. If you pair it with a red or a pink, you will look like a Christmas tree. (Read: The Secret to Styling a Green Pageant Gown) Miss Earth Costa Rica 2017 Fernanda Rodríguez followed this rule and won the silver medal in the long gown competition at Miss Earth this year.

Yellow gowns Yellow is a loud color and one of the hardest to style. With such a bold color, keep the makeup simple and go with a lipstick similar to your natural lip color. You could even skip it all together with a super shiny gloss. (Read: How to Choose the Right Yellow Evening Gown) Miss Universe Jamaica 2017 Davina Bennett embodied this perfectly at the Miss Universe pageant last month. Her yellow gown stole the show when paired with her afro and natural makeup.

Red gowns Red can be a tricky one. Similar to yellow, red is a power color on stage. Keeping this in mind, a nude lipstick is always the safer bet. Miss Brazil 2017 Monalysa Alcântara let her red gown shine by completing her look with a natural shade.

This does not mean a red lip cannot work with a red gown. It is a very bold look that requires a lot of personality to carry. Miss Earth Sweden 2017 Camilla Fogestedt took the risk and was a bombshell at Miss Earth. (Read: Top 10 Red Pageant Dresses of 2017)

Pink/purple gowns Pink or purple gowns are grouped in the same category because the same rules apply. Red or pink lipsticks should be avoided at all costs. They clash, plain and simple. Miss Earth Denmark 2017 Sabrina Jovanovi? knows how crucial a nude lipstick can be in this scenario. Her pale lilac gown looked was complemented, not overpowered by her lipstick choice. Gold/nude gowns This is a trend that has taken the pageant world by storm. With multiple international winners being crowned in this color, its popularity is sure to only increase. Gold gowns are normally highly embellished and delicate. A natural lipstick, like Miss Grand International 2017 Maria Jose Lora's, is perfect to match the softness of the gold tones. Finally, there are nude gowns. With the top crown in pageantry, Miss Universe, being awarded to Miss South Africa 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who wore this nude gown with blue beading, designers everywhere are sure to make some version of the winning gown. Part of the reason Nel-Peters won was due to her styling. The natural lipstick is perfect for the delicate details on the gown.

There are many factors that determine which lipstick you should wear. The color of the evening gown is not the only factor to consider when picking an evening gown. There are other elements like hair color, skin tone and bone structure to name a few. In the end, the important thing to remember if that if you are happy with how you look, your confidence will show to judges.
