Taveras is a native of Lawrence, Massachusetts and the daughter of Maria Taveras. She is a 2013 graduate of Central Catholic High School located in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Growing up, she did not have an easy route. She was sexually abused as a child and lost a friend to gun violence on the streets of Lawrence, all before she was 13-years-old.
However, Taveras is not one to let obstacles stand in her way. After graduating high school, she attended Emmanuel College in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Concentration in Neuroscience. During her time, she was a member of the Dean’s List and received an Emmanuel College Dean’s Scholarship.
Taveras began her pageant journey as a way to inspire others that you do not have to be defined by the past. Her own experiences inspired her platform, F.E.A.R. – Face Everything and Rise.
Taveras’ first tried her chance at the Miss Massachusetts USA crown in 2017. She placed as second runner-up and was voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants.
After cracking the Top 5 on the Miss Massachusetts USA stage, Taveras entered into the Miss America Organization. She was crowned Miss Boston 2017 and went on to place in the Top 11 at Miss Massachusetts 2017. She also won a Preliminary Swimsuit Award.
Taveras came back for her second time at the Miss Massachusetts crown as Miss North Shore 2018. She got into a minor car crash on her way to check-in, but did not let that stop her from chasing her dream. She arrived at check-in ready to compete, winning her second consecutive Preliminary Swimsuit Award during the competition.
On June 30th 2018, Taveras made history as she was the first woman of color to be crowned Miss Massachusetts. She crowned Miss Massachusetts 2018 at Hanover Theatre in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Taveras will compete for the title of Miss America 2019 on September 9, 2018 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
