Smits was born in Stuttgart, Germany to a military family. Her father was a Special Forces officer and her mother was a military intelligence officer. When her family returned to the states, they settled in McDonough, Georgia.

At age 10, Courtney started her own organization, Queens For Courage, which raises support and awareness for wounded soldiers who require prosthetic care.

Smits attended Union Grove High School located in McDonough, Georgia. There, she was part of her school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program. She was also a member of the school’s chorus.

After graduating from high school, Smits enrolled at the University of North Georgia located in Dahlonega, Georgia. She also joined the Army Reserves. Smits currently attends Marymount University located in Arlington, Virginia and is a psychological operations specialist in the Army Reserves.

Smits started competing in pageants many years ago. She was appointed the title of Miss Georgia Jr. Teen America with the Miss Teen America pageant. She then competed in the 2010 Miss Jr. Teen America pageant where she won the title of Miss Jr. Teen America 2010.

After completing her reign, Smits registered for the 2012 Miss Georgia USA and Miss Georgia Teen USA pageant. On November 19, 2011 Smits was crowned Miss Georgia Teen USA 2012 on her first try at the title. Smits then represented Georgia at the 2012 Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageant. There, she was named a semifinalist and walked away placing in the Top 16.

Smits continued her pageant journey with the Miss Collegiate America pageant. She entered the 2016 Miss Georgia Junior High School, High School and Collegiate America pageant where she was crowned Miss Georgia Collegiate America 2016. Smits represented Georgia at the 2016 Miss Collegiate America pageant.

Smits returned to the pageant stage in 2019 when she registered for the 2019 Miss Virginia USA and Miss Virginia Teen USA pageant. Representing Woodbridge, Smits was crowned Miss Virginia USA 2019 on November 25, 2018 at the TCC Roper Performing Arts Center located in Norfolk, Virginia.

Smits will go on to compete for the title of Miss USA 2019.

On June 6, 2019 Smits attended the 75th anniversary of D-Day commemoration, alongside Vice President Mike Pence, in Bedford, Virginia. She read an excerpt from Anne Frank's diary during the ceremony.

She is the seventh former Miss Georgia Teen USA to compete at Miss USA and the second to represent a different state. She is the ninth former Miss Teen USA state titleholder to win Miss Virginia USA since 2000. She has one brother named Trevor. At the age of 11, she was named a State Honoree by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.
