After multiple years of competition, Schuman, an Anchorage native, captured her dream title of Miss Alaska 2018.
In 2016, Courtney competed in the National Sweetheart Pageant after Miss America ending their partnership. While she did not make the finals, she was awarded one of three Misti Runge Memorial Scholarship.
Schuman will be starting her last semester at the University of Alaska Anchorage as she prepares for the 2019 Miss America Pageant. She is currently on track to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Environment and Society with a minor in Outdoor Leadership.
Her studies have presented her multiple opportunities to experience both rock and ice climbing. She even had the chance to take a beginning mountaineering class!
She started her platform, Empowering Youth for a Brighter Tomorrow, after she was presented with an opportunity to speak with struggling youth and inspire them to pursue their dreams. Part of Schuman’s devotion to her platform comes from her struggles with self-confidence.
Growing up, Schuman says she was not as encouraged to reach out into the sciences. As a result, it took a long time for her to step into herself and feel confident as a woman in STEM.
With her platform, she hopes to encourage youth to dream big and accomplish whatever they want to be.
She is most excited about getting out into her community and volunteering during her reign as Miss Alaska.
