About Miss New Castle County and Miss Diamond State Scholarship Organization

Miss New Castle County and Miss Diamond State Scholarship Organization is an official preliminary to the Miss Miss Delaware Scholarship Organization.

“The focus of the Miss Delaware Scholarship Organization is to make scholarships available to the State’s most promising young women, providing them with educational choices and opportunities for personal and professional growth.”
Delaware joined the Miss America family in 1933 with its first representative, Victoria George. Through the early years the competition was not an annual event due to the world wars and other economic conflicts which suffered throughout the nation. In 1966, the Miss Delaware Competition moved to Convention Hall in Rehoboth Beach, a resort oriented community similar to Atlantic City. In 2006, the Miss Delaware Competition moved to Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover, the Capital of the First State.
On June 7, 1977, with the help of Senator Richard Cordrey, Miss Delaware became the Official Hostess to the state. The original Rehoboth Beach franchise was held by the Chamber of Commerce and the pageant directors were chosen from its membership. In 1973, a board of directors was chosen and the Miss Delaware Scholarship Organization was born.
In 1972, Catherine Lawton was the first Miss Delaware to be named as a Preliminary Talent Winner and selected for the top ten in the Miss America Competition. She traveled with the U.S.O. Troupe overseas to entertain U.S. Servicemen. In 1976, Debora (Day) Lipford and 2010, Kayla Martell were also named to the top ten. Galen Giaccone was also named as a top fifteen finalist in 2009. Other state title holders have gone on to win swimsuit, talent, congeniality and non-finalist talent awards.
The Miss Delaware Scholarship Organization is a not-for-profit organization that is the official state preliminary for the Miss America Competition. The Miss America Organization is a scholarship-based program.
