As a plus size woman of colour who has endured many years of institutional racism and ridicule, developing low self esteem and confidence was the inevitable. I searched and found a system that was completely accepting of who I am, and as I was.
It used key buzz words, "inclusive" "plus size" and "confidence boost". The systems name uses a term 'Voluptuous' a positive conno...tation used to describe full figured women. Since joining, I gained a immediate sense of belonging. The first time for many years.
Prior years , it was nice to see a woman of colour had won. Who became representation and gave hope it can be done. The director, is a life changer! Literally and figuratively, she works tirelessly to ensure each contestant from different walks of life is supported. Inclusivity is a very important part of the system, and it geniunely means alot to her. From the beggining she spoke words of wisdom, expertise and uplifting messages to me, as it was visibally evident i had zero confidence. She was accessible throughout my finalist journey, and it being my first pageant. I never felt alone.
The system is truly what it says it is, and unique compared with many pageant systems. It is a sisterhood ( I have friends made from the system across the uk, and overseas), empowerment and leadership programme (it continually empowers women, by encouraging them to not only be their best self but to embrace all parts. In turn positively impacting on the world around us. By influencing others who look like us, to find self love). It celebrates all beauty, shapes and sizes above size 14 uk. When this has not always been presented as the current beauty standards, its niche market. It is a ally for marginalized groups such as the LGBTQIA plus and black and brown community as well as many others. Reflecting our society as a whole.
I can honestly say, Miss Voluptuous United Kingdom has changed my life positively forever, by creating meaningful change. It was my first time in pageantry, and I am the second woman of colour to be crowned, and first joint ethnic win. I am the new Ms Voluptuous Celtic Nations 2022. I am the representation my community needed for many years, thanks to the evolving system Miss Voluptuous UK this has finally been achieved. I now have a rare opportunity and platform, to amplify black voices and stories which were not always valued or represented. Sending a very powerful message, that we are enough to be a part of the majority.
