The Miss Iowa 2018 Scholarship Competition was an official preliminary to Miss America 2019.
Mikhayla Hughes-Shaw was crowned Miss Iowa on June 16, 2018. At the time of crowning, Mikhayla was 21 years old and studying Journalism at the University of Iowa. Before winning Miss Iowa, Mikhayla held the title of Miss Wild Rose 2017. At Miss Iowa 2017, she won the Non-Finalist Talent Award. After this, she won the title of Miss Clinton County 2017 and was able to compete for Miss Iowa once again. At Miss Iowa 2018, Mikhayla was awarded a Preliminary Talent Award and then was crowned Miss Iowa 2018. Mikhayla's social impact statement as Miss Iowa was “H.O.P.E. - Helping Others and Providing Encouragement”, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to suicide prevention and awareness that she continues to run. Mikhayla's Miss America talent was violin.
