The Miss Universe Spain pageant is a preliminary to the Miss Universe Pageant.
The pageant began in 1929 and continued until 1936 when the country began a civil war. The pageant started back up in 1960 and has been ongoing since then.
It is currently broadcasted by Telecinco to the entire country.
Prior to competing in the pageant, contestants must appear before provincial branches of the pageant, learn all the rules and requirements and understand the methods of selection in that province. Once a contestant is selected they will represent their province at the preliminary competitions and events. At the end of the preliminary competitions, a new Miss Spain is crowned.
At the pageant, contestants compete in four competitions: Interview, Swimsuit, Evening Gown and On-Stage Question.
Miss Spain 1973, Amparo Munoz, was crowned Miss Universe 1974. She is the only national titleholder to ever win the Miss International crown.
Miss Universe Spain is also responsible for sending the first ever Transgender woman to the Miss Universe pageant. Angela Ponce became the first ever Transgender woman to win the title of Miss Spain and the first ever to compete at the Miss Universe pageant.
