Why start competing in pageants

My posture was poor and I was that petite kid with a unibrow, braces, headgear, and acne. After miraculously making the middle school cheerleading team, things began to change. One summer, my mom went to visit family in Vietnam so I asked my dad if I could go to modeling school. I remember a pretty lady asking me to walk back and forth at the modeling school prior to enrolling. My dad enrolled me and my mom was shocked that he actually spent the money. After one year of modeling school, I decided to compete for Miss Jr. Teen Raleigh to apply what was taught. I didn't place but won Miss Overall Photogenic and got my first experience at a national pageant in Orlando, FL. One of my parents' friends flew down with me at my first teen pageant and I was hooked. I didn't wear makeup, have any nice clothes, or even knew anything about interview but had a blast. My goal was to simply practice turns on stage and do them well. I won Miss Congeniality and reapplied for Miss Jr. Teen Raleigh the next year. The first runner also reapplied so it was fun to see a familiar face at my second pageant. The next year I won the crown and went back to nationals to win Miss Congeniality again. After a few Vietnamese pageants, Miss IL International pageant, and local pageants, I was asked to compete in Ms. Corporate America. After surviving a hit-and-run accident as a pedestrian, I was not in any shape to compete because of a broken collarbone. However, I worked with Valerie Hayes with interview and felt like MCA was a good fit for my career path as an entrepreneur. On the final night, I was called out at 1st runner up only to see the head judge run up to the stage. I was the wrong runner up and actually beat a beautiful gal who was a foot taller than me. Nonetheless, I had an amazing reign connecting to MBA organizations. After getting married and potty-training two babies, I am excited to compete in Mrs. USA Petite in hopes to help women worldwide to connect with confidence through my book, workshops, and speaking. As a First Generation American who arrived to the USA with nothing, I feel so blessed to obtain my education and share the gifts that God has blessed me with. After all, you just can't out give God.
