Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Kristen Hovda is 18 years old and the youngest of five. She loves spending time with her family every chance she gets. “I have always felt fortunate to have a big supportive family. My dad’s advice to us has always been that your siblings will be your best friends, and we are very close. My sister Allyson was Miss Iowa Teen USA 2009 and ever since then I have dreamed of opportunity to follow in her footsteps.”
Kristen is currently a senior at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids. She has been involved in cheerleading, show choir, soccer, track, theater, and is a member of the National Honor Society. In her down time she enjoys playing piano, exercising, and working as a runway model. Following graduation, she looks forward to attending Iowa State University with a major in Chemical Engineering.
Kristen enjoys traveling and has visited 26 states and 14 countries. Some highlights of her travels include hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru and staying in a 200-year-old house in Switzerland. Her love of travel has also inspired her to be apart of several service trips and volunteer camps. She has most recently returned from Ecuador where she worked with Centro del Muchacho Trabajador teaching underprivileged children English.
This year, Kristen plans to take on every opportunity that comes her way. She hopes to be involved as much as possible in community and state events. “I’m so excited to represent the state of Iowa in a positive and uplifting way!”
