(Written by Kerri herself): I started competing in pageants because of the opportunities they would give me to develop better social skills and speaking abilities. I feel that good speaking skills are a necessity because they are used to communicate important messages and ideas that the world needs to know. I will say however, I first learned of pageants when I was about four years old or so. My town holds an annual Maple Syrup Festival and they would always have a Maple Syrup Queen. I was so inspired by the queens and their pretty tiaras, as they rode in each parade. When I was fourteen years old, I took the opportunity to compete for the title of Maple Syrup Queen. I was not given the title, but instead, awarded the Spirit of Wakarusa Essay Winner, given to the contestant with the best essay about someone who has greatly impacted them. I wrote about my sister. This was definitely a great experience for me and I would consider this to be a big gateway into what my future withholds.
