Katie has lived in New Mexico most of her life. She graduated from Las Cruces High School and currently resides in Roswell, New Mexico with her husband Jeff and three sons, Jacob (16), Aiden (15), and Eli (9). Katie and her family attend Christ's Church and serve in the children's ministry and summer Sports Camp. Katie received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Eastern New Mexico University and also holds a MA in elementary education from ENMU as well. She is a certified yoga instructor and holds a NM real estate license. Katie is a teacher at East Grand Plains Elementary School where she is currently teaching 5th grade. Through her work with children, Katie sees the need for kids to have a safe place to turn to, and experience the love and acceptance of someone in their lives. "So many students come from a place that most of us can't begin to imagine. They are forced to grow up before they should. As an educator, my job first and foremost, is to build a relationship with students in my classroom. Once that happens, then learning can take place". If given the opportunity as Mrs. New Mexico, Katie will use her year to promote awareness and advocate for foster and adoptive families and children. Katie is part of the leadership team of Lighthouse Foster and Adoptive Support. Lighthouse strives to provide a safe and loving community for foster and adoptive families in the Roswell area, while using biblical principles to provide educational opportunities to the public, inform churches and families, advocate for the tangible and emotional support to foster and adoptive families. "It has been amazing to see how our community has embraced this new organization in the last year and how willing everyone is to learn and help out in some way". Katie enjoys learning new things and challenging herself constantly. From participating in the Bataan Memorial Death March, to running a 48.6 mile race at Disney with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to competing in her first power lifting competition, nothing is out of reach. "My family is the best, and knowing that they support me makes all the difference. I want everyone to know what that feels like".
