I'm a blessed displaced Cajun who has made Maryland home. My outstanding husband, our six children, and my son-in-law are my sunshine on rainy days. After encountering a serious mental health crisis with my son, my family seemed to turn upside down. As we overcame those dark days together, I became passionate about helping bring awareness to mental health issues and working to bring suicide prevention education to those I encounter. This is when I was introduced to pageantry. The women I have been blessed to share the stage with, the men and women who have encouraged me as a public speaker on this issue, and my family have inspired me every step of the way. I have a dream of helping to make mental health care and suicide prevention a topic that individuals, families, churches, and local communities discuss with the same importance and normalcy that we so easily speak about other healthcare priorities like fighting cancer, diabetes, and heart health.

Why start competing in pageants

Amazing leaders making a difference in my community encouraged me to open my mind to entering pageantry because they knew that my dream of normalizing conversations surrounding mental health and making suicide prevention a community priority throughout the world could become a reality through the amazing opportunities pageantry provides. I have found that the pageantry journey has not only opened doors to make a real impact in these areas, but it has also helped me believe in my own unique gifts. Seeing so many incredible women believing in their message as they have encouraged me to pursue mine is incredible. As a married mother of mostly grown kids, I had never really known the great things that women in pageantry do on behalf of others, to better their communities, or to become better versions of themselves. Once I learned that it was about much more than pretty dresses and beautiful hair, I was hooked.

FUN FACTS about Gretchen

I love crime shows and Dr. Phil. My favorite color seems to change every few years. Louisiana style bread pudding is my favorite dessert. My husband sang songs that he wrote about our falling-in-love story in a full CD album and even had a sold-out concert to perform it.
