Ms Earth 2017 is Kristin Chucci!
As we wrapped up National Suicide Prevention Month in September, one brave titleholder shared her story and battle with depression and suicidal thoughts. Ms. Earth shared a personal and touching Facebook post about her battle to let others know that they are not alone. (Read:

On Saturday, there was a post on the
Ms. Earth Facebook page authored by
Ms. Earth 2017,
Kristin Chucci, about her ongoing struggle with depression. The post featured two pictures of her, one at 12 years old and one of her crowning moment. In the post she wrote, "2 pictures taken nearly 21 years part. Most will see happiness, accomplishments and perhaps a transformation. What I see is depression." (Read:

She then went on to speak very candidly about some of her darkest days and suicide attempts when she was just 12 years old. She went on to say that she was told the depression would go away after adolescence but, "22 years later I am still the 'little girl' strug
gling with depression; even during my most exciting and rewarding days."
Chuck then credits the amazing people in her life that continuously help her in her darkest times. She closes the post with, "Today isn’t always a good day for me but knowing that I’m not alone is sometimes all I need to push through to tomorrow."
About the cause
It is always incredible when a titleholder uses their platform to bring attention to something worthy of awareness. So many people are unaware of the signs of depression and suicide, so Chucci bringing awareness to all of the Ms. Earth followers is incredible. (Read:

Depression often begins in the teenage and 20s years but can happen at any age. According to the
National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 6.7% of adults have experienced a major depressive episode in the span of 12 months.
Some symptoms of depression include:
- persistent sad, anxious or "empty" mood
- feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
- irritability
- feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness
- loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
- decreased energy or fatigue
- thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts
- appetite or weight changes
- aches or pains, headaches, cramps or digestive problems without a clear physical cause
