About Rose Bowl Pageants

Known as "The Granddaddy of Them All," the Rose Bowl began in 1902 to offset the cost of the Tournament of Roses Parade which began in 1890.

The Football Game wasn't held again until 1916 but has been held every year since. However, the first Rose Queen wasn't selected until 1905.

Today, over 1,000 girls interview to be on the Tournament of Roses Royal Court. The girls go through multiple rounds of interviews throughout the month of September with the committee looking at poise, personality, public speaking, and scholastic achievement.

It begins with a 15-second introduction to the committee in which the contestants state their assigned numbers and why they are participating. From there it is whittled down to 250, then to 75, then to 25 finalists.

From there, seven royal court members are selected. Those who are selected to be on the Royal Court will attend more than 100 public functions, including media appearances leading up to their reign over the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game.

However, not just anyone can interview for the role. Only high school seniors and full-time college students in the Pasadena Area Community College District who are at least 17-years-old by December 31, 2015 and not older than 21 before January 5, 2016 with at least a 2.0 GPA the last two years can interview for the position.

There is no fee to participate in Royal Court selection and Royal Court members "receive a small educational scholarship, wardrobe for your appearances, professional hairstyling, make-up application and instruction, transportation to and from Royal Court activities and a number other benefits," according to the Tournament of Roses website.

The Rose Queen and Court was in the Rose Parade presented by Honda on New Year's Day from Pasadena, CA. Following the Rose Parade was the 102nd Rose Bowl game presented by Northwestern Mutual, when #6 Stanford beat #5 Iowa.

The 2016 Tournament of Roses Royal Court consisted of Princess Sarah, Princess Rachelle, Princess Bryce, Rose Queen Erika, Princess Regina, Princess Natalie, Princess Donaly.
