Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States.
The definition of hip-hop dance is well known by dancers across the world. Whether it be your form of dance, or having seen it before, hip-hop is a form of dance that is constantly transforming. Hip-hop, just like all forms of dance, is a form of dance that helps express your emotions through body movements and styles. The question still stands though; Would a Hip-Hop dance be good for pageant talent? After reading my Top 10 Strangest Pageant Talents article, you may think not, but here are a few reasons you may want to make hip-hop dance your next pageant talent.
Hip-Hop is Powerful
From its tight form, to its hard breaks, hip-hop can show high energy in your performance. The techniques you must master to perform a hip-hop routine are what truly make this talent so unique. The power behind hip-hop is through the rhythm of the music and energy in the dancer.
Hip-Hop is Emotional
The strong formality and techniques of hip-hop give it an enormous amount of emotion. Whether it be positive or negative emotion, hip-hop can tell a story that is very interesting and entertaining to watch. The emotion is what draws in the audience and helps them connect to the dancer in a personal way.
Hip-Hop is Difficult
Although all forms of dance are truly difficult, hip-hop is the type of dance that requires an even stronger knowledge of technique and ability. Anybody can do the moonwalk like Michael Jackson if they practice it, but true talent within hip-hop dancers is born within. It is a skill that you have to earn and work very hard for, but the outcome is well worth it when you can leave an audience in awe with your techniques and abilities.
Because of popular new dance shows and movies, many people see hip-hop as a vulgar dance that shows nothing but impulsive hip thrusting and "angry dancing". I have looked into many videos on youtube to help me find the perfect dancer to show that hip-hop can be more than what you think.
This video shows how hip-hop can not only be powerful, unique, and very difficult, but also very emotional.
