If you are a local titleholder in the Miss America Organization or planning to compete as one, show up looking polished and professional. Cocktail dresses and other high quality appearance wear/state pageant wear is appropriate. This does not mean you need to wear a full length dress. If you're stumped, check out the photo gallery of Julius Tolentino from Virginia, who usually travels to the big event and takes photos of local and state titleholders. That will give you a gauge on what to expect. I would also suggest that you read our, "Where to Wear it" column for wardrobe advice and ideas.
If you are related to a contestant who wins, I imagine it's a whirlwind afterwards. You could be shown on the telecast or asked to pose in photos, so show up looking your best. Sometimes the camera also pans out to the state delegations when a contestant makes the semi-finals, so look professional and sharp. This could be your loved one's time to shine in the spotlight! A nice pantsuit or dress works well.
Although people wear a variety of clothing styles to see the big show, most people will at least be dressed business casual and many more may be dressed in cocktail attire. Choose something that you love and that looks good on film if you're planning to have photos taken while you're there. You never know who you might meet! Remember that "little black dresses" always work when you're stumped on what to wear.
Everything from the NFL to Miss America has handbag rules now, so make sure you look them up before you go. To make security easier, there are restricted items you cannot bring at all and rules about handbags. Clutch handbags are approved and clear bags 12x12 are also acceptable. If you bring something else, be prepared to take it back to your room or car, because I heard this was enforced strictly last year. Finally, make sure you are wearing shoes you can tolerate. Stuff some roll-up flats in your clutch if you're worried about your feet hurting. You might have to walk or stand before getting into the show, so make sure the shoes are broken in. Pack some lipstick, your camera phone and breath mints inside that clutch and you're good to go! Are you going to Miss America 2015? Have a favorite to win?
