Finding the right swimsuit to wear is one of the hardest parts of the pageant competition for every girl. There is a lot of thought that goes into the swimsuits that we pick. We not only have to look at style and cut, but also color. The color of your swimsuit can make or break you in a competition. When getting your competition swimsuit, you should always choose a color that complements your skin tone. Finding the right color for your complexion is hard because most people aren’t familiar with the tone of their skin. Here are a few tips to help ease the stress of choosing the swimsuit color to best suit your complexion.  First, you need to figure out if your skin is warm-toned or cool-toned.

What Skin Tone Color Are You?

To check if your skin undertones are warm or cool, first look at your veins. One good way to tell if you’re warm or cool is to check the color of your veins. If your veins on your wrist look blue, you have a cool skin tone. If your veins look green, your skin tone is warm. When you go out in the sun do you get a bright red sunburn or do you get a tan?

Those with cooler skin tones often burn rather than tan, while those with warmer skin tones usually get tan right away or get a tan once their sunburn subsides. Once you’ve figured out your complexion tone, it becomes time to figure out what colors work best for which tones.

  • Cool tones: Those with cooler skin tones often have pink, red or blue undertones. These undertones really make a difference when deciding what color works best for your complexion. Blues, greens, purples, pinks and cranberry colors look best with cool skin tones. Personally, I think the blues and green stand out more on stage, and helps those with cooler skin tones look radiant!
  • Warm tones: Those with warmer skin tones often have a yellow, golden or peachy undertone. Having a warmer skin tone makes it a little easier to match the colors to your complexion, especially if you are tan or have darker skin because most colors will stand out on your glowing complexion! For warmer skin tones, the colors yellow, green, orange, red, cobalt and black all look great against the complexion. Red and cobalt are major standouts in my opinion, but be aware, those colors have become a lot more popular over the last year, so you may be wearing the exact same suit as the girl next to you!

Swimsuit Hardware

Now you may be thinking that since you have already figured out what colors work best for your skin tone, you can easily find the perfect swimsuit with no problem! But there is one little detail that you should always take into consideration: swimsuit hardware.

  • What is swimsuit hardware you ask? Well, swimsuit hardware are those little pieces of metal jewelry, usually silver or gold, that jazz up your swimsuit either between the breasts, on the straps or on your bottoms. These pieces of hardware are usually overlooked, but there is no harm when considering what swimsuit to buy based on the color and the hardware.
  • Gold hardware looks best on warm skin tones. The gold brings out the golden, yellow tones of the skin while being subtle enough to not take too much attention from your face. Gold jewelry also looks radiant against warm tones, so maybe throw on a gold bangle or pair of hoops to bring the whole look together!
  • Silver hardware looks best on cool skin tones. Wearing silver brings out the cool tones of your skin and compliments most colors that work with your complexion. Wearing silver hardware for those with cooler tones helps to keep the colors light and fresh, and doesn’t overpower the suit or your skin tone too much. Just as gold jewelry compliments those with warmer skin tones, silver jewelry works wonders for those with cooler tones. Wear a pretty bracelet or sparkly earrings and you are bound to be a showstopper!

Disclaimer: You can wear whatever color you want and still be beautiful! This article is simply a guide to help you feel more confident when choosing what colors works best for your complexion when looking for your competition suit. Choosing your competition suit is hard, and will probably end up with you trying on every color and piece of jewelry that works best for you. Not one girl is the same, so finding the color that makes you feel the most confident and beautiful that you can be, should be the color that you choose!
