Just like pageant day, prom takes a lot of time and preparation beforehand to make sure that you look and feel your absolute best on the day of the event. Two seasoned pageant girls, Madison Giddens, Miss University of Georgia 2015, and Bryanna Davis, Miss Madison/Elbert Forestry 2011 share their tips for making prom the best experience possible.
1. The Confidence
"If you feel like you look like the bomb.com, you probably do," said Bryanna Davis. Pageant girls know how to get stage rocking confidence, take that same confidence with you to prom. If you feel great about yourself and your experience, others will too. If you're new to the world of pageantry, prom is a great place to practice living out that confident inner-beauty. aving killer confidence will make you feel better and help you have more fun. The great thing is that confidence is contagious, so your security in yourself can spread to your date and your friends and help everyone have a better prom experience.
2. The Date
Let's face it, this is the person that you're going to be spending most of your evening with, so who you go to prom with can make or break the experience. If you don't have a boyfriend, make sure whoever you do go with is someone whose company you'll really enjoy. "I always made sure my date was someone who was funny! Your going to be glued together at the hip for the majority of the night taking those awkward prom pics so if he can make you laugh, you're ensuring yourself a good time," said Madison Giddens. 3. The Preparation
"I look at every single detail," said Bryanna. When preparing for prom, you want the same details for prom to be covered that you would prepare for in a pageant. In same way that you remember to bring plenty of extra bobby pins and makeup wipes for a pageant, you're going to want to think through what could happen at prom and be prepared for that. Not only do you want to be prepared for the events at prom, you want to be prepared for prom week. Madison recommends drinking lots of water in the days leading up to prom because you want to stay hydrated amidst all the dancing that night. She also recommends getting your nails done ahead of time. "For two reasons. One, you beat the prom day crowds and aren't as pushed for time to finish getting ready the day of. Two, we have all had nail fails where we thought a certain color, cut, or design was going to look perfect with a certain outfit only to get home and discover otherwise." Plan ahead for your nails and practice your hair and makeup beforehand to ensure that everything coordinates and is exactly the way that you want it for prom night. You'll look back on the pictures for years to come, so make sure that you master the aesthetic that you're going for. (Read: How to Prepare for Your First Pageant)
5. The Experience
"Treat prom like a huge party with all your favorite people in one setting just dressed up a bit more than usual. Don't romanticize it in your head to you being Cinderella at the ball and leaving your glass slipper behind for your Prince to find. Let's face it, reality can't live up to Cinderella's fairytale. If you do leave a glass slipper and a prince calls to deliver you a kingdom I want you to let me know! However, if you take the pressure off of yourself and simply enjoy all the wonderful aspects of prom you might just have yourself a magical night!" shared Madison. Putting too much pressure on prom to be the absolute best night of your life can take the fun out of it and cause you to be disappointed or your date to be discouraged when it doesn't meet your expectations. Taking away these expectations and going into prom looking to have fun with everyone there will ultimately give you a night that you won't want to forget. 6. The Winner
"Treat prom like it's your stage!" said Madison. "Essentially, win the 'Miss Congeniality' award for being the social butterfly – don't just dance with your friends, grab the girl you see sitting alone, Whip and Nea Nea with her, and remind her of how beautiful she looks!" Beyond all the preparation and the dress, you want to care for others like a pageant queen. Your confidence and smile are contagious, so share them! The best way to get a great experience out of prom is to focus on making it fun for those around you. In doing so, you'll have a better experience, and you'll go home knowing that regardless of if you had your perfect fairytale moment, you were able to make it something special for others. With a great date, preparation and confidence, you can go into prom ready to have the best experience possible and to walk out at the end of the night feeling like a pageant queen.
