For this week's interview practice, answer one question in the mirror each day.

  1. If you had the opportunity to invent something, what would it be?
  2. If you could go back and live in any decade, which would it be and why?
  3. What’s something new you recently learned about yourself?
  4. If we were to ask your friends, how would they describe you?
  5. Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Should you hire a hair and makeup artist for headshots?

Remember last week when we said a picture is worth a thousand words so you’ll want to really make an impression on the judges when it comes to what you’re wearing and the accessories you’ve chosen? Well, the same goes for the way you’ve chosen to do your hair and makeup.

Honey, your top and accessories could look spectacular but if your hair is all over the place and your makeup makes you look washed out, you might as well have just taken the headshot on your phone! Let’s not make that mistake.

If you can't do it yourself, the answer is, yes, you should definitely hire a hair and makeup artist for your headshots. You can’t just hire anyone though, you’ll need to consider a few things before booking someone to get you all glammed up.

Experience

It can be really tempting to hire your mom’s best friend’s daughter, but like everything else related to pageantry, you’ll want to invest in someone who has experience with the pageant industry. You’ll also want someone who has experience with the makeup and hairstyles that work best for being in front of the camera.

Remember this photo is the first impression you’re making on the judges and the audience. It’ll be plastered everywhere... program book, social media, the pageant’s website, Pageant Planet’s directory. Don’t make the mistake of hiring an amateur hair and makeup artist that can’t even find the shade that matches your skin tone.

Of course, skin care is just as important as makeup, so check out our skin care article here.

Schedule

Ask your potential artists what their schedule looks like leading up to pageant season. Are they fully booked out so that you’ll be racing to meet the deadline? Do they have a large team of artists that could take care of you and still produce the look you’re going for?

You’re paying quite a bit for this service so you don’t want to be an afterthought. You’ll want to hire someone who is fully committed to making you look amazing for your photos or has the team to help make this possible.

Test Run

See if it’s possible to do a test run of the makeup and hairstyle that you’re looking to have for your headshots. Most artists will do this at a cost, so ask what it costs too. It’s okay to have a test run with a few different hair and makeup teams if you have the time for it. After all, you should probably be planning for your headshot fairly close to the beginning of your pageant prep.

Confidence

When it comes to your pageant hair and makeup, whether it’s for the actual pageant weekend or for your headshot session, you’ll want to make sure that the artist you choose makes you feel confident in your skin.

If you feel like something is off or you feel like the look isn’t you, have a discussion with the artist on what you’re looking for or find a new artist. For more tips on some winning pageant makeup and hair looks, check out this article here.

Now, if you’re an expert in hair and makeup yourself, then you don’t have to hire it out. If it means it’ll be less stressful for you, we would definitely recommend doing your research about which hair and makeup artists have worked in the pageant industry and maybe even your pageant system. We've got all the hair tips you can hope for right here.

Here is your homework for the week… check out this pageant makeup tutorial here with former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach. Watch the video at least once. Grab your makeup and go back to the video and try following along to try to do it yourself. If you had a difficult time and were more frustrated than you would’ve liked, start doing some research about hair and makeup artists that you can hire.
