As the Miss America's Outstanding Teen pageant approaches this summer, we are preparing to say goodbye to our beloved 2018 titleholder, Jessica Baeder. Baeder did a phenomenal job this year advocating her platform "Healthy Food For All" and being a role model to teens across the country, but don't worry, she has exceptional plans for after her reign as well. (Read: How to Choose the Right Platform for You) Baeder has been accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Following a military legacy Baeder's father, grandfathers and great-grandfathers have all served in the military, and Baeder described feeling honored to follow in their paths. In a Facebook post, she said, "This has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl." How will Baeder adjust from living a glamorous life with gowns and crowns to becoming a cadet at one of the most prestigious military academies in the United States? "There is no doubt that the emphasis that the Miss America's Outstanding Teen and Miss America programs place on service, community engagement, scholastic achievement, physical fitness and leadership skills prepared me well," Baeder said. "These elements are well-matched with the qualities West Point seeks in its cadets." As Miss Alabama's Outstanding Teen 2017 and Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2018, Baeder proved to be a hard-working, passionate and affectionate young woman during her years of service. She has raised over $10,000 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals and has as spent over 800 hours dedicated to providing healthy food options for all communities. (Read: How to Promote Your Platform Through Community Service) As the winner of the Outstanding Dance Talent Award and the Preliminary Talent Award for her performance of a jazz en Pointe routine to “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" at the national pageant, she is obviously a phenomenal dancer, but you may not know that Baeder also has a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do that she received at the age of nine. We have no doubt that Baeder will be doing amazing things as a former. We will definitely miss her, but we know that she will be making our country proud in a different way. Good luck, Jessica!
