How to Win a Pageant (Without a Coach)

09, September 2013

I have such a deep respect for those who have devoted their lives to the industry of pageantry. Pageantry boasts the confidence of young girls and helps them network their way into opportunities that were previously unattainable. However, pageantry is expensive. And it can be VERY expensive depending on the system you are competing in, the dress you want to wear and coaches you hire. Does everyone need a coach to win their pageant? No. There are so many variables that you cannot make a blanket statement.

How to Decide If You Need a Coach to Win?

Take into consideration your age, your experience, and your time. If this is your very first pageant and you are in the teen, miss, ms or mrs pageant then you will need to hire a coach who can help you from the very beginning. The alternative is to compete 2 or 3 times before you get the hang of it and then if you pay enough attention to what the other girls are doing you can guide yourself to be a better pageant girl but this is not the recommended approach. For one it's more expensive and it takes longer. It's more expensive because you will more than likely over spend in areas that have little value and under spend in the areas that will help you stand out the most. A coach can help you do this. Extremely young contestants, ages 7 and below, can often times get away with no coaching if mother has pageant experience. If the mom doesn't have pageant experience then she is going to need help on how to save money and where to spend money when it comes to her daughter and pageantry. If this age group is to participate at a competitive level, then I would opt for professional coaching. At the end of the day I do not know of a successful person who does not hire a coach. But, what does coaching look like?

What is the Cost of a Pageant Coach?

Coaching can come in many different forms from 1-on-1 in person coach to 1-on-1 virtual coach to reading articles and applying the principles learned in those articles. All of it "coaching". But, for the purpose of this section we are going to give you price ranges.

  1. 1-on-1 In Person Pageant Coaching - This will range from $50 per hour to $150+ per hour. The amount of money that a coach charges depends on the their reputation in the industry and the fullness of their schedule. Usually, the trend is the better their track record of success the more money they charge per hour, which is standard in every industry from attorneys to football coaches. Visit the following link to find a recommended pageant coaches.
  2. Pageant Box - When you sign up for our Pageant Box you will get unlimited access to our membership portal where you can ask coaches in our database questions, receive a monthly to do list based on your age division and the date of your pageant and receive a Pageant Box filled with goodies that will help you prepare to win the crown. The best part is this service is only $29 per month. Visit, Pageant Box for more information.

How to Win Without a Coach

If hiring a pageant coach is not in your budget then there are other options. Here are some of the resources that you will NEED to follow if you insist on not hiring a coach.

  • Create a Preparation Timeline: You need a road map to follow if you're going to be successful in pageantry. You need to know when to start training for swimsuit, when to start practicing your makeup looks, when to start focusing on your pageant walk. Create a free contestant account on Pageant Planet to unlock this feature.
  • Practice Interview Questions - Half of being prepared is knowing what to prepare for. We've compiled 233 pageant interview questions that are age specific and we give them to you for free. We interview judges, directors and contestants to keep a pulse on what's being asked inside interview rooms throughout the world and give them to you for free. To unlock this perk create a contestant account!
  • Find an Accountability Partner: Your results will increase exponentially when you have someone who will hold you accountable for your actions. I recommend using a friend or boyfriend for this. Using your mom or dad is usually a disaster and causes more stress than support. In business, life and pageantry being accountable will help you experience more success!
  • Journal:  This may seem a bit cliché, but journaling is a great stress reliever and is much like an agenda with reflective and personal qualities, but a lot less stressful and demanding.

Honestly, by doing these 4 things you will be way ahead of the the girls who are not hiring coaches. The above is practical and it's free. Please don't let this be another article that you read online that you do not take action on. Let's start working together today in either a free or a paid capacity so that we can help you achieve your dream! Save
