Several talent variations
The most common pageant talent is vocal. For anyone who has ever been to a live competition, this becomes clear very quickly. Second only to singing is dance. There are so many variations and styles of dance, which makes it a great choice. As an audience member, we have all experienced the talent that was painful to listen to or watch. Whether it be lack of skill, nerves, or confusion, talent is frightening for both the contestants and the audience members.
However, we also tend to remember the dynamite acts as well. Newly crowned Miss Country Sunshine 2014, Meryl Anne Dexter is a shining example. As she glided across the stage to the microphone, no one anticipated the magic she was to bring forth. As she started to sing, the audience soon realized that it was not in English, but French. In her operatic pitch, Meryl Anne sang a lovely French tune that stunned the audience and won her the crown!
Consult a Professional
Find a voice coach, a dance teacher, or even a family friend who sings in the church choir. Have them watch your talent performance. Be open to constructive criticism. Steven, the founder of The Pageant Planet, has said that constructive criticism is an asset and has helped him grow as a businessman and as a person. Don’t take it personally. You would rather hear it in practice than make a flop onstage.
Seek Further Instruction
Once you have determined your talent, seek further practice with the coach or help of your choosing. Pay very close attention in each session. You are likely paying for this instruction, so utilize the teacher and pick their brain with any questions or concerns you might have. Also, taking notes is not a bad idea. You might even ask the instructor’s permission to video tape the session so that you have it digitally.
Yes, that’s right, you have another excuse to go shopping! Talent costume shopping is very important. Your outfit must coincide with the theme of your music, etc. Dancers typically know great online outlets for dance apparel. One that I have found useful is dancewearsolutions.com. They have great stock and fair prices. Depending on your talent you might even decide to go the handmade route. Many higher level competitors have their costumes made for authenticity purposes. Take Ali Rogers’ outfit at Miss America. Wow, it was amazingly intricate and fun!
Bedazzled and rhinestones galore was the theme for this little number. Her suit earned her a coveted top 5 spot! There are so many minute details and facts about talent and I don’t pretend to know the half of them. With that said, feel free to add your favorite talent coaching tip. And always remember: Keep your heels, head, and standards HIGH!
Her tip is: "Remember you are fearfully and wonderfully made.”Learn More
