The stage is set, the lights are dim, and the emcee welcomes into the ballroom the overall panel of pageant judges. You hear the audience cheering for their favorite contestant as the music plays and the spotlight shines. All of the hard work you put in for the pageant has brought you to this very moment and you are filled with anticipation as you wait for your National American Miss Pageant Finale to begin. As a NAM girl, we all know how this moment feels. It is so exciting, but it is also a moment where our nerves run wild! How are we supposed to calm those nerves before a final pageant? After all, within the next few hours, your whole life could change. (Read: 8 Signs You Are a NAM Girl)
Share the Excitement With Your New Friends
Why keep all of your excitement bottled up when you have so many incredible girls to share it with? Some of my favorite memories I have from National American Miss are the moments I shared with my friends before our show began. Whether it was frantically running through the opening number dance or huddling together in a group prayer, enjoying the anticipation together was the best way to overcome our nerves.
Take a Deep Breath
As typical as it sound, making sure you are actually breathing before your show begins could really help with the butterflies in your stomach. Sometimes we get so anxious we don’t realize we aren’t allowing ourselves to take deep breaths like we usually do! (Read: 5 Tips to Calm Your Nerves Before Pageant Crowning)
What The Experts Say
Of course, numerous studies have been done to explore how to deal nervousness. Some of the experts say to make sure you feel extra prepared, think positively, get a good night’s sleep, avoid caffeine, and drink lots of water. One of my favorite tips I read was to keep a smile on your face, as it is a natural relaxant that sends a positive message throughout your body. You’re never fully dressed without a smile!
Your Wardrobe Changes
There are multiple wardrobe changes that happen in a pageant finale. To help yourself feel extra prepared, go through each outfit you will be wearing and pack them in a bag to take to the dressing room. Don’t forget shoes and accessories! You may also want to pack safety pins, hairspray, bobby pins, etc.
The Hard Work Is Already Done!
At this point, you have completed all of your required competitions. You were able to show your personality in a one-on-one interview with the judges, conquer public speaking in your personal introduction, and shine beautifully in your formal wear competition. You saw the streets of Hollywood, spent a day in Disneyland, and even had a chance to win a brand new car. The only thing left to do is enjoy yourself and remember that God already knows how this show is going to end. Of course, you all have your dream planned out for the conclusion of this week, just as I did before my pageant finale began. However, I would constantly remind myself that no matter what happens from this point forward, God already knows the outcome and that is something I always found comfort in.
Wishing the best of luck to all of the contestants about to embark on the exciting journey of a National American Miss Final Pageant. May you find comfort in all that you have already accomplished and turn your nerves into motivation to fulfill all of the wonderful things God has planned for your life. “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:9.
